You are looking down on a current-carrying loop, lying horizontally in a magnetic field that is also horizontal and pointing north. As seen from above, the current circulates clockwise. Magnetic torque on the loop will try to rotate the loop which way? a. North side upward, south side down. b. West side upward, east side down. c. South side upward, north side down. d. East side upward, west side down.

Answer #1

The current is in clockwise direction. Hence the magnetic dipole of this loop will be directed into the page, perpendicular to the loop. The magnetic field is in north direction. Hence the torque is in the direction on , which is towards east.So due to this torque, loop will have north side upward and south side down. Because . Since torque is directed towards east, force at north point will point out of page while force at south point will be directed into the page.
