Instrument transformers are high accuracy class electrical devices used to isolate or transform voltage or current levels. Instrument transformers are two types. They are 1.current transformer. 2.potential transformer.

Current transformer are used to step down the current of the power system where as potential transformer is used to step down the voltage of the power system.

Current transformer connected series with power circuit and the potential transformer connected parallel with power circuit.

Advantages of instrument transformers are

1.by using these instrument transformers the measuring instruments can be standardized.

2.they provide electrical isolation between high power circuit and measuring instruments.

3.they consume low power.
