A cord of mass 0.65 kg is stretched between two supports 8.0 m apart. If the tension in the cord is 140N, how long will it take a pulse to travel from one support to the other?

Answer #1

Solution:-

Given –

              Mass = 0.65 kg

              Tension = 140 N

              Length = 8.0 m

First you need to use the formula to first find the velocity of the pulse because they you will be able to get the time from the velocity because we are given the distance.

V = √ [tension / (mass per length)]

V = [T / (m/d)]

V = √ [140N / (0.65kg/8.0m)]

V = √ [140 N / 0.08125]

V = 41.50 m/s

Therefore by using below formula,

V = d/t

t = d/v

t = 8.0 m / 41.50m/s

t = 0.19 sec.

Result = 0.19 second.
