A bungee jumper (mass 80 kg) is attached to a 10 m bungee cord attached to the top of a crane. For the first 5 meters of extension, the force exerted by the bungee cord increases by 2 N for every 1 cm. For any further extension, the force increases by only 1.2 N for every 1 cm..

a) Sketch the elastic force vs the length of the bungee cord.

b) What is the maximum extension of the bungee cord in this situation?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

So as the weight of 80 kg jumper is = 80*9.8=784N

as force increse by 2N for evry 1 cm so after 5meter extension force = 1000N

and further 1,2 N for every 1cm so graph will look like

b) as the weight of jumper is 784N so,

maximum extension = 784/slope

force 1800 1600 1400 1200 1000 El saticforce 800 600 400 200 -2 2 8 -200 10 12 6 length(m)

extension 784 x2 = 1.568m 1000

A pendulum is constructed from a 4.6 kg mass attached to a strong cord of length 0.9 m also attached to a ceiling. Originally hanging vertically, the mass is pulled aside a small distance of 8.1 cm and released from rest. While the mass is swinging the cord exerts an almost-constant force on it. For this problem, assume the force is constant as the mass swings. How much work in J does the cord do to the mass as the...
