Who will perceive a longer elapsed time for an event, a stationary observer watching the event or an observer moving with the event?

A) the moving observer

B) the stationary observer

C) both experience the same time

Homework Answers

Answer #1

the relation between relativistic time (t) and proper time (to) is given by :

where v is the velocity of moving object ( spaceship, rocket etc.)

since v is always less than c , that is the velocity of moving object is always smaller than the speed of light , hence t is always greater than to

now, we know that to is the proper time , which is the time measured by the observer moving with the event.

Therefore, longer time will be precieved by STATIONARY OBSERVER (t)

A muon is a type of unstable subatomic particle. When high-speed particles from outer space (sometimes called "cosmic rays") collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere, they can create muons which travel toward the Earth. Suppose a muon created in the atmosphere travels at a speed of 0.941c toward the Earth's surface for a distance of 3.48 km, as measured by a stationary observer on Earth, before decaying into other particles. (a) As measured by the stationary observer on Earth,...

People who remain stationary for long periods of time are at risk for developing blood clots in the leg, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The biggest complication of DVT occurs when these clots are dislodged and travel to other areas of the body. Where would you expect these moving clots to go? What organs are most likely to be affected?
