How density and pressure change in the atmosphere and why
Air pressure and density change together as we enter different layers of the atmosphere. As the atmosphere expands the further we get from the Earth’s surface, it becomes less dense and air pressure decreases.
Density is how compact the molecules are in a solid, liquid, or gas. Our atmosphere is made of millions of tiny gas molecules. Gases in our atmosphere include nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide. These gas molecules are free to move about and shift around. The more compact those molecules are to each other, the more dense the atmosphere. As you travel away from the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere expands the further you go. That expansion allows gas molecules to spread out resulting in the atmosphere becoming less dense.
