troduction
The following document contains a series of questions relating
to content that has been, or will be,
discussed in class. Please be aware that, on first assignment,
not everything contained in this
problem set will have been addressed directly in class.
However, all content will be addressed by
the time this problem set is due. With that said, it would be
a good idea to work on the problems
over the course of their assigned period, completing questions
relating to content discussed in class
as we discuss it, rather than waiting until the last minute
and attempting to complete the entire
problem set at once. You will get more out of the exercise by
doing it over time.
Kinetic Molecular Theory
1. How would you describe all matter?
2. According to the Kinetic Molecular Theory, what is
temperature?
3. Explain why there is no negative temperature in the Kelvin
scale?
4. Give an engineering example of dealing with thermal
expansion.
Laws of Thermodynamics
1. From a molecular point of view, how would you describe
thermal equilibrium?
2. Give an example of the following systems:
a. Closed
b. Open
c. Isolated
3. Explain the sign conventions for both work and heat and
describe what they mean in
observable terms.
4. A 25g piece of metal absorbs 300 Joules of energy and
experiences a 17 K increase of
temperature. What is its specific heat? Please make sure to
include correct units.
5. A 50g sample of ice at 270K is heated until it becomes
steam at 385K. How much energy
was absorbed by the water?
