The figure below shows a person fishing with a fishing rod that makes an angle of 20.0° above the horizontal. The distance from the person's hand to the tip of the rod is

L = 2.04 m.

A fish is on the line, and it pulls the line with a force of

F = 121 N

at an angle 37.0° below the horizontal. What is the magnitude of the torque (in N · m) exerted by the fish about an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through the person's hand?

A person fishing in a boat holding a fishing rod has a fish at the end of his line. The rod is of length L and he is holding it an angle of 20.0° above the horizontal. The fishing line, which extends from the end of the rod, makes an angle of 37.0° below the horizontal. A dotted line extends from the tip of the rod and makes an angle of 20.0° above the horizontal. An arrow labeled vector F points along the fishing line toward the fish.

N · m

From the figure.
Calculate the angle of line meet the pole:
180° - (37° - 20°) = 123°
Calculate the angle between the fishing line and perpendicular line.
123 - 90 = 33°

The unknown force having two components on is perpendicular acting at 90° and
normal one acting along the pole.

Torque is the product of force and its perpendicular distance,

so calculate the perpendicular component.
FP = F cos 33°
FP = 121 cos 33°
FP = 101.479 N

Calculate the torque.
T= F x d
T=101.479 N x 2.04 m
T= 207.0174 N -m
