1. You need to push a box across the room. The box has a narrow side and a wide side. Based on friction alone, which side of the box should be the side down on the floor?

2. Note the relative magnitudes of the friction and explain why they vary in size.

Answer #1

1. The wide side should be on the side down on the floor as the value of friction will be less. Hence, it will be easy to push the box across the room and they chance of box getting toppled will be reduced.

2. They vary in size because when you keep the box with narrow side down on the floor, it will create strong inter-locking with the floor which give rise to high friction value. Hence, it will be more difficult to push the box with the narrow side down on the floor as compared to the box with wide side down on the floor

After a hard day's work, you return home and decide to clean your apartment. In order to do so, you need to move your bed which has a mass of 110 kg. You exert a horizontal force of 270 N and your bed refuses to move. You roll up your sleeves and keep pushing until you exert a horizontal force 540 N. The bed slides a little but now you are exhausted and stop pushing. You have an aha! moment...

You are trying to drag a heavy sleeper-sofa across your floor. The sofa has a mass of 150 kg and the coefficient of static friction between the couch and the floor is 1.08. Being a bright physics student, you realize that you can make this easier by pulling upwards and forwards at the same time rather that just pulling the sofa forwards. If you pull on the sofa at an angle 32? above the horizontal how much force does it...

1) You have been asked to develop a walk-way made of glass across a deep canyon as a tourist attraction (think rip-off of the Havasupai Indians walk-way at the Grand Canyon). A supporting steel frame will be built so the glass simply has to support the weight of the morbidly obese Americans walking across it. Your task is to select the glass for the project. Here you want to discuss the potential unique hazards of using glass in this fashion....
