A solid cylinder rolls without slipping down an incline starting from rest. At the same time a box starts from rest at the same altitude and slides down the same incline with negligible friction. Which arrives at the bottom first?

A. It is impossible to determine.

B. the box

C. the cylinder

D. Both arrive at the same time.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

B) the box

Reason

The box will because there is no friction thus going down an incline will cause it to accelerate, and eventually beat the ball.

In reality, such a problem is impossible. Nothing is frictionless, we can come close, but there will always be friction.

Say Friction is the negitive force because it is pushing against gravity. Gravity=positive force Friction= Negitive Force. putting a negitive force on the ball as the ball goes down will slow the ball down and eventually stop it.

The box has no friction and since gravity is acceleration, gravity pushing down on the box will cause the box to acclerate since there is no negitve force.
