Styrofoam has a density of 300kg/m3

What is the maximum mass that can hang without sinking from a 80 cm diameter Styrofoam sphere in water? Assume the volume of the mass is negligible compared to that of the sphere.

Homework Answers

Answer #2

Solution:-

Volume of Styrofoam sphere

where r=80/2=40cm=0.40m

mass of Styrofoam sphere,

Let m be the max mass that can be hang from the sphere.

In floating condition-

total weight=upthrust force

=>(M+m)g=weight of displaced water

=>(M+m)g=V×water density×g

=>M+m=V×water density
