Relativistic quantum physics predicts that every fundamental particle has a corresponding antiparticle. When a particle and it’s antiparticle collide, they are mutually annihilated. But total energy and total momentum must be conserved. What carries the energy and momentum after the annihilation?

Answer #1

Answer : When a particle and its antiparticle collide, they are mutually annihilated. These annihilations do not occur in a purely random way however; they must obey 3 rules. The conservation of energy, the conservation of momentum and the conservation of charges.

Consider  the annihilation of an electron e- and its antiparticle the positron e+.The combined mass is converted into pure energy in the form of photons. (2 gamma-ray photons are necessary to conserve momentum) and charge. Since the charges cancel at the beginning before the collision there is no net charge after collision.

The Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP) was an accelerator at CERN, the International particle physics laboratory in Europe. As its name implies, at LEP electrons (e- with mass of 0.51 MeV/c2) were collided close to head-on with their anti-particle, positrons (e+ with the same mass). Each of these particles was accelerated to an energy of 104.5 GeV by the time they collided. What is the Lorentz factor $\gamma$ of an electron at this energy? How fast as a fraction of the...

Q Computers has invented quantum computers. Each computer contains an exotic sub-atomic particle. Unfortunately this particle decays in the same manner as all radioactive particles. Therefore an average quantum computer only lasts for 14 months. The University has purchased one of these computers and Professor Squiggle wants to use it for 7 months. When he tries to book it he finds that it is already booked out for the first 5 months. So he books it for the next 7...

One of the many fundamental particles in nature is the muon mu. This particle acts very much like a "heavy electron." It has a mass of 106 MeV/c^2, compared to the electron's mass of just 0.511 MeV/c^2. (We are using E = mc^2 to obtain the mass in units of energy and the speed of light c). Unlike the electron, though, the muon has a finite lifetime, after which it decays into an electron and two very light particles called...

Elon Musk wasn’t smiling, when he said, “Welcome to Model 3 handover.” Through a single silver door, a few moments before, he had entered the room, flanked by nearly two dozen employees including an engineer and designer who joined him on stage. Black floor, rich red curtains, and slate grey backdrop and a white Tesla logo. There were no introductions necessary. At first, Musk’s voice had a breathy quality. He seemed nervous. Nerves were understandable on the precipice of what...
