The active circuit region of a wafer may contain impurities and these impurities can degrate the performance of a circuit. The getting is a process for the removal of these degrading impurities from the active region of a wafer.

In a typical metal base systems, the denuded zone are formed at the grain boundaries. These are most likely to form during the creep of particle hardened substances. So it is mainly a thin region of semi conductor substrate adjacent to the surface which is cleared from contaminants.
