What is an operational definition of uncertainty in an experiment?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Uncertainity is a parameter associated with the result of a measurement, that characterizes the dispersion of the values that could reasonably be attributed to the measurand. This uncertainity has a probablistic basis and refelcts incomplete knowlegde of the quantity value. This type of uncertainity is known by calculating the standard deviation of the repeated measurements.

Sometimes the uncertainity is associated with the the limitation of the measurement due to a minimum least count of the measurement.
