Suppose you take an interest in astronomy. You are at an astronomy conference and you are listening to a presentation where a scientist is describing a new planet. The scientist says "The planet Xhhroylg is completely solid and convects heat from its inner core towards the surface at a rapid rate. Although no electromagnetic radiation escapes through its dense atmosphere, its heat conducts through the reaches of outer space and that explains how it cools down."

In your original post, discuss at least three instances where, scientifically, this presenter is incorrect.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The three instances are :

1. Since the planet is completely solid, the heat from the inner core can conduct from its inner core towards the surface at rapid rate. (Convention is a phenomena which happens in liquids).

2. For cooling down something should indeed escape from the planet and it is not possible to have nothing to escape from the planet and still it cools down.

3. For cooling down there should something going out from the planet and it is usually in form of radiation because in outer space there is no convention or conduction possible. The radiation is in form of Electromagnetic Radiation.
