In Oregon's Crater Lake, there is a tree stump which has been floating around for more than a century. It's nicknamed "the Old Man of the Lake."

From the wikipedia entry, we have the following estimated measurements for the Old Man:

  • 9.0 m tall (total, including the parts above and below the water)
  • 1.2 m stick up above the surface of the water
  • 0.6 m in diameter

You can also assume the following:

  • it is a cylinder
  • it has a uniform density

Your assignment:

  • Draw a diagram of the Old Man floating in the water. Label all of the given dimensions.
  • Determine its density in kg/m3. You must show the entire calculation symbolically (using letters, not numbers). Do not plug in any numerical values until the last step. You will get zero points if you plug in the numbers early. However, you will get full credit if you complete the calculation and show your work, even if the answer is wrong in the end.

Extra credit challenge problem (+1 point): The wikipedia article claims that the tree is bouyant enough to support a person's weight. Check whether this is true or false. (Again, do not plug in numbers until the last step.)
