A man tosses his hat in an attempt to catch it on the hook of a hat rack. If the man throws the hat with a velocity of 1.5m/s at an angle 50degrees to the horizontal and it lands on the hook (while descending) after 0.19s, how high above or below the point of release is the hook?

Answer #1

Since this picture of throwing the hat at some angle resembles that of a projectile motion we can simply consider the vertical part of that motion to solve our problem. The thing is, according to the question the hatt reaches the hook while descending. So, in terms of vertical motion the hatt must have first reached the highest point in its trajectory and then started coming down. We can calculate ethe time taken by the hatt to reach the highest point and then subtract that time from the total time given. Then see what distance the hatt covers from its highest point in this calculated time. This way we will have our required point.

A boy stands on a fishing pier and tosses a pebble into a pond. The pebble is thrown from a height of 2.50 m above the water surface with a velocity of 4.80 m/s at an angle of 60.0° above the horizontal. As the pebble strikes the water surface, it immediately slows down to exactly half the speed it had when it struck the water and maintains that speed while in the water.
