The Earth-Sun system contains gravitational and kinetic energy. Discuss what happens to this energy as the Earth goes around the Sun: Is one type of energy continually decreasing or increasing? Is this energy being transformed into thermal energy? Is this energy being replenished constantly somehow?

Answer #1

Earth moves in an elliptical path around Sun. It's distance from Sun keeps changing.

As earth comes closer to sun, gravitational potential energy decrease, while kinetic energy of earth increase. As it moves away from sun, gravitational potential energy increase, while kinetic energy decrease. Sum of kinetic & gravitational potential energies remains constant.

Hence there is no continues increase or decrease of these energies. As sum of these energies remains constant, no thermal energy is generated or energy replenished.

Calculate the kinetic energy that the earth (ME = 5.98× 1024 kg) has because of (a) its rotation about its own axis (RE = 6.38× 106 m) and (b) its motion around the sun (Ro = 1.50× 1011 m). Assume that the earth is a uniform sphere and that its path around the sun is circular. For comparison, the total energy used in the United States in one year (365.25 days) is about 9.3× 1019J. 1. On occasion, the Earth-Moon-Sun system is aligned such that the Earth or Moon casts a shadow partially or directly on the other body. These events are called eclipses. A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is in a position where it blocks sunlight from getting to Earth. A. Draw a Sun-Earth-Moon diagram for each kind of eclipse (lunar and solar). Make sure you draw your diagrams large...
