Aside from generating electric power for the general public, nuclear reactors are also used to power submarines. Explain why nuclear fuel is well-suited for this application.

Answer #1

answer) submarines need to stay under water for a long period of time, the power generated by nuclear reactor can last for years without refuelling.so the nucear fuel can give power to the submarine which is very high and lasts years.Although nuclear power plant are costly , they use less fuel and produce more energy , this helps in saving raw materials but also handling and extraction of nuclear fuel. The submarines need to operate at high speeds and the nuclear fuel produces high power due to its chemical reaction which helps in high speed of the submarines. These are the reasons nuclear fuel is well suited for submarines.

Carbon has been(infrequently) used in nuclear reactors as a neutron moderator. Neutrons from the fissioning of a uranium nucleus are moving too fast and must be slowerd down to keep the chian reaction going. Elastic collisions between a fast neutron and a carbon atom initioally at rest will leave the neutron with a slower final speed(their speed is moderated). a. how many such elastic collisions are necessary for the neutron to reduce its speed to less than one third of...

A nuclear power plant generates 3000 MW of heat energy from nuclear reactions in the reactor's core. This energy is used to boil water and produce high-pressure steam at 300?C . The steam spins a turbine, which produces 900MW of electric power, then the steam is condensed and the water is cooled to 25?C before starting the cycle again. A) What is the maximum possible thermal efficiency of the power plant? Express your answer using two significant figures. B) Cooling...

US residents and domestic companies consume 6 billion megawatts of electricity each year. Aside from a few large companies that generate their own electricity, everybody else buys electricity from electric utility companies. These utilities have a variety of sources for the electricity that they generate -- coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear, and hydro plants. Which of these sources have the high fixed costs and which have low fixed costs? Why? What about variable costs? How do you think managers of...

Hydrogen gas can be used in a chemical reaction to produce electricity. This type of electric generator is called a fuel cell and it may replace gasoline engines in cares in the next few years. The hydrogen gas used in fuel cells must be generated by chemical reactions. One method used to generate hydrogen gas is to pass an electric current through water. The electricity used to split the water molecules could come from renewable energy sources such as solar...

A local coal fired 200 megawatt electrical generating plant has a thermal efficiency of 30% and a nuclear 150 megawatt electrical generating plant has a thermal efficiency of 25%. a. Calculate the waste heat emitted by each (in megawatts) b. If the cooling water used for the nuclear plant were required to only rise in temperature by 2o C after it absorbs the waste heat, how much water per hour would be required to cool the nuclear plant (in cubic...

Liquid oxygen (LOX) is used in the aerospace industry, steel industry, electric power plants, and hospitals. A hospital is installing their own bulk oxygen system due to their large volume of consumption. OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.104(b)(2)(iii) requires owners of bulk oxygen systems to provide noncombustible surfacing in areas where liquid oxygen might leak during operation of the system or during the filling of a storage container. If the hospital provides an asphalt surface in areas where oxygen could potentially...
