What characteristics of a sound wave are related to the "pitch” of a musical note? Please explain. (a) Amplitude (b) Loudness in dB (c) Frequency (d) Intensity
Solution)
Loudness ie. Amplitude and frequency are the two characteeistics of sound that are related to "pitch" of a musical note. If frquency of a note is high, pitch is high and vice-versa. Same goes with amplitude, where loudness defines the shrillness and hence pitch of a sound.
A) Amplitude is defined as the loudness of a sound. It is equal to the maximum displacement made by a particle of a sound wave from its equilibrium position.
B) Loudness is defined as the auditory sensatiin of sound which depends on amplitude of a sound wave. Its unit is decibles(db).
C) Frequency is defined as the number of wave cycles made in one second. It determines the pitch of the sound and is measured in hertz.
D) Intensity of a sound wave is defined as the power carried per unit area in a direction perpendicular to area of the sound wave. Its unit is watt per square metre.
