A venturesome woman plans to bungee jump from a cliff 66.0 m above the ground. She plans to use a uniform elastic cord, tied to a harness around her body, to stop her fall at a point 13.0 m above the water. Model her body as a particle and the cord as having negligible mass and obeying Hooke's law. In a preliminary test she finds that when hanging at rest from a 5.00 m length of the cord, her body weight stretches it by 1.70 m. She will drop from rest at the point where the top end of a longer section of the cord is attached to the cliff.

a)What length of cord should she use?

b)What maximum acceleration will she experience?

A daredevil wishes to bungee-jump from a hot-air balloon 73.0 m above a carnival midway. He will use a piece of uniform elastic cord tied to a harness around his body to stop his fall at a point 12.0 m above the ground. Model his body as a particle and the cord as having negligible mass and a tension force described by Hooke's force law. In a preliminary test, hanging at rest from a 5.00-m length of the cord, the...

You sign up for a bungee jump off a tall bridge. A thick rope with a fixed length of 16.0 m is tied to the bridge, and a bungee cord with an unstretched length of 8.00 m is then connected to the rope. The other end of the bungee cord is attached to your legs. You step off the bridge, falling from rest. The bungee cord does not start exerting any force on you until you have fallen a distance...

Design a "bungee jump" apparatus for adults. A bungee jumper falls from a high platform with two elastic cords tied to the ankles. The jumper falls freely for a while, with the cords slack. Then the jumper falls an additional distance with the cords increasingly tense. Assume that you have cords that are 12 m long, and that the cords stretch in the jump an additional 19 m for a jumper whose mass is 120 kg, the heaviest adult you...

A ski jumper starts from rest 56.0 m above the ground on a frictionless track and flies off the track at an angle of 45.0° above the horizontal and at a height of 19.0 m above the ground. Neglect air resistance. (a) What is her speed when she leaves the track? (b) What is the maximum altitude she attains after leaving the track? (c) Where does she land relative to the end of the track?
