If you are watching the Indianapolis 500 car race, which value will tell you who is winning: the average speed or the instantaneous speed of each car? Which quantity is more important for a car trying to set a speed record (to see how fast it can go)? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The average speed will tell who is winning as its higher or lower value will mean higher or lower distance covered respectively and who is winning is decided by who covers the distance in least time, and not the instantaneous speed as it will change each instant and may rise or fall.

For a car trying to set a speed record instantaneous speed is more important as a speed record is made when instantaneous speed, and not average speed, is highest ever.
