Describe, in your own words, what each term below means when used in physics. Pretend you are trying to explain the exact meaning of each term to someone who has not studied physics. Give an example each time.
a) Transverse wave
b)Longitudinal wave
c) Destructive interference
d) Standing wave
a) If the particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction of the propogation of wave then it is called as transverse wave.
Ex : waves on a string, waves on water surface
b) If the particles of the medium oscillate along the
direction of propogation of wave then it is called as longitudinal
wave.
Ex : sound waves
c) The point where the resultant amplitude becomes least is said to be dectructive interference.
Ex : Nodes on a standing wave.
D) when a travelleing wave and reflected wave overlap we get a new wave which is called standing wave.
Ex: waves on a string fixed between two ends.
