In order to reach as high as possible in a vertical jump, what position should an athlete adopt at takeoff and at the peak of the jump? (Hint which body position will result in the greatest distance between the fingertips and the CG at the peak of the jump?)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

At the start of the jump the knees are slightly bent to provide a better push when you takeoff. Also it keeps the center of gravity slightly lower that when standing straight up (you can't jump high standing straight up, you have to bend you knees to achive that jump). An optimal angle for knee bend will give the highest lift.

For the greatest distance between the fingertips and CG of the body, you have to be able to lower the CG of the body. A lower CG means more mass is to be distributed in the lower sections. Standing straight would help in keeping the mass distribution lower and thus nearer to earth.

What is the magnitude and direction of the force required from your legs to jump a certain horizontal distance, R? Express the result in terms of your weight, W = mg. Assume that you project yourself into the jump by lowering your body and forcefully straightening your legs, so the force that launches you is applied over the extent of the crouching position, d. Also assume that you angle the direction of the applied force from your legs in such...

When you jump, you start by crouching down a bit, which lowers your center of mass to a distance d ≈ 40 cm below where it normally is. You then exert a downward contact force on the ground equal to about 2.5 times your weight (mg); we may assume that this force is constant while it acts. After your center of mass rises past its usual location, you leave the ground with an initial velocity v, and you reach a...

Design a "bungee jump" apparatus for adults. A bungee jumper falls from a high platform with two elastic cords tied to the ankles. The jumper falls freely for a while, with the cords slack. Then the jumper falls an additional distance with the cords increasingly tense. Assume that you have cords that are 12 m long, and that the cords stretch in the jump an additional 19 m for a jumper whose mass is 120 kg, the heaviest adult you...

In order to get going fast, eagles will use a technique called stooping, in which they dive nearly straight down and tuck in their wings to reduce their surface area. While stooping, a 6-kg golden eagle can reach speeds of up to 53 m/s. While golden eagles are not very vocal, they sometimes make a weak, high-pitched sound. Suppose that while traveling at maximum speed, a golden eagle heads directly towards a pigeon while emitting a sound at 1.1 kHz....
