After a golf ball is hit it takes off with an initial speed of 28.3 m/s and at an angle of 37.5° with respect to the horizontal. The golf field is flat and horizontal. Neglecting air resistance how far will the golf ball fly? Incorrect. Tries 1/12 Previous Tries How high will the golf ball rise? Tries 0/12 How much time will the ball spend in the air? Tries 0/12 How far would the ball fly if the initial speed was doubled? Tries 0/12 How much time would the ball spend in the air in this second case?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1] Range of a projectile is given by:

so,

this is how far the golf ball will fly.

2] Maximum height will be:

so,

3] Time till which it will remain in air is:

T = R/ucos37.5

=> T = 78.94/(28.3)cos37.5 = 3.516 s.

4] Since R is proportional to square of the initial velocity, therefore, the range will be 4 times the initial range if the speed is doubled.

5] Time it spends in air will be doubled since the range increases by a factor of 4 but the speed increases by a factor of 2 so, T = R/ucos37.5 will overall increase only by a factor of 2.
