The light is having dual nature, that is it has both particle nature and wave nature. But, it will not show both the nature at a time. When light interacts with the geometrical edges, since it has nature, it will bends or try to spread out. This phenomenon is known as diffraction. It is completely due to the wave nature of light. If it passes through a hole or a slit and the size of the slit is in the order of the wavelength of the coming light, the spreading is maximum. The situation can be visualized easily if we consider a pool with a flat boundary inside it. If the boundary has a small hole, disturbances from the right comes and hit the boundary and diffracts through the hole.
