Describe the concept of potential flow used in fluid dynamics.

Describe the concept of potential flow used in fluid dynamics.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

potential flow , in fluid dynamics, refers to the flow outside the boundary layer that obeys the laws of potential flow like electric and magnetic fields. This is sometimes called the inviscid flow region meaning that transverse velocity gradients (aka shear) are minimal and viscous effects are small to none.

potential flow represents the velocity field as the gradient of a scalar function: the velocity potential. As a result, a potential flow is characterized by an irrotational velocity field, which is a valid approximation for several applications.

Pumps/Fluid Dynamics: A pump having Hpump= -1.8E-5×GPM2 + 1.2E-3×GPM + 350 is placed in a system having Hsys = 12 + 2.5E-5×GPM1.9. The speed of the pump is changed, resulting in a new flow rate of 2,000 gpm. What head is required from the pump at the new condition?

A random sample of 12 ballistic missiles are taken in a study of the Fluid Dynamics under Wind Tunnel. Measurements on the Normalized Reynolds Coefficient are made for each of the 12, yielding an average value of 48.50 with a sample standard deviation of 1.5. Assuming the measurements to be normally distributed, construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean Normalized Reynolds Coefficient.
