Left over from the big-bang, tiny holes might still wander through the universe. If one with a mass of 1 E 11 kg and a radius of only 1 E -16m reached Earth, at what distance from your head would its gravitational pull on you match that of Earth's.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

mass of the given hole, mh = 1 * 1011 Kg

radius of the hole, rh = 1 * 10-16 m

Let my mass be m and the distance of the hole from my head be d when its gravitational pull is equal to that of earth

Gravitational force experienced by me due to earth, Fe

            where g is the acceleration due to gravity on earth, g = 9.8 m/s2

Gravitational force experienced by me due to the hole Fh

For the gravitational pull of the hole on me to match the gravitational pull of the earth on me, the above two forces should be equal, i.e.

d2 = 0.6810 m2

d = 0.82 m

A rock is released from rest at a distance D = 1.5 × 107 m above the surface of the Earth as shown in the figure. Useful constants for this problem are the universal gravitational constant G = 6.67 × 10-11 Nm2/kg2, the mass of the Earth Me = 5.97 × 1024 kg, and the radius of the Earth Re = 6.38 × 106 m. 1)What is the speed of the rock, vfvf, when it has fallen to a distance...

Wal-Mart Online Wal-Mart is one of the largest companies in America. It is definitely the largest retailer, both in terms of the number of stores (8,970 worldwide in 2011) and the level of sales ($419 billion from the 2011 Annual Report). By pushing suppliers to continually reduce costs, Wal-Mart is known for pursuing low prices and the stores often attract customers solely in-terested in lower prices. With Wal-Mart’s expansion into groceries, the company has be-come the largest retail grocer in...
