Consider a stationary submarine completely submerged in the water in the Pacific Ocean. Take the density of sea water to be 1030kg/m^3.

a) What is the net force acting on the submarine?

b) What is the average density of the submarine (including the air)?

c) If the mass of the submarine is 3.5x10^7kg, what is the volume of the submarine?

d) What is the buoyancy force acting on the submarine?

e) Imagine that the submarine drops a large rock decreasing the mass and density of the submarine. What would happen to the submarine?

f) If the large rock has a volume of 2.5m^3, what is the buoyancy force acting on it?

Answer #1

(a) Since the submarine is stationary when it is submerged the net force acting on it will be zero. ie. The bouyant force and the gravitational force acting on the submarine is equal.

(b) Now, as said in (a) the gravitational force and Bouyant force is equal (Let the amount of water displaced be V). Then,

Therefore the average density of submarine and sea water should be same, Hence average density of submarine including air is 1030 kg/m^3.

(c) The mass of the submarine is 3.5 x 10^7 kg and average density of submarine is 1030 kg/m^3. Hence the volume of submarine is,

(d) The amount of water displaced will be equal to the volume of submarine, Hence the amount of Buoyancy force acting on the submarine is,
