A particle with charge -4.35 mC is initially moving along the x-axis. It encounters a magnetic field of 15.0 T ı ^ +11.50 T k ^ , producing a magnetic force of 2.11 mN ȷ ^ . What is the velocity of the particle? Enter your answer as positive number if it is moving along the +x-axis and a negative if it is moving along the negative x-axis. Your answer should be three significant figures.

Answer #1

Solution:

From the given information,

Let the velocity that is moving in x direction be v

v = v i

And

q = - 4.35*10-3 C , B = 15.0 i + 11.50 k and F = 2.11*10-3j N .

Using the equation of magnetic equation,

F = q [v x B]

2.11*10-3j = -4.35*10-3 [(v i) x (15 i + 11.5 k)]

2.11 j = - 4.35 [- 11.5v j]

2.11 j = 50.025v j

50.025 v = 2.11

v = 0.0422 m/s.
