A skydiver jumps off a plane at height 15,000 ft above ground. Find an expression for the total energy of the diver at any given time during his fall. Be sure to express total energy as a function of time.
The skydiver will have mainly two types of energy:
1. Kinetic energy due to its speed towards ground
2. Potential energy due to his height above ground
As soon as skydiver starts coming down, his Kinetic energy "(1/2)mv2" starts increasing, his potential energy "mgh" will start decreasing.
If we ignore all other forces e.g. air-resistance (which takes energy out of skydiver and results Terminal velocity), then energy of skydiver will be
mgh + (1/2)mv2 and it will be equal to Potential energy at the start of fall= mg*(15000)
His energy is independent of Time and always equal to m*g*15000 (Units in FPS system)
