1. Is centripetal force a contact or non-contact force? Explain with an example.

2. When an object travels around a circle with a constant speed, in what Direction is its centripetal acceleration?

3. Describe a real-life situation where friction acts as a centripetal force. (Can be continuous or momentary)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1

The centripetal force is not necessarily a contact force. Some cases, it can contact with objects. For example, circular rotation of small ball tied at the end of thread.

In some cases, it cannot contact with objects. For example, the Earth rotates around the sun without contacting the sun.

2

The centripetal force is always acts towards the center. That is the centripetal acceleration directed towards center.

3

In the case of circular motion of car, the frictional force between tires and road provides centripetal force. In this case, the frictional force continuously provides necessary centripetal force while the car is moving in a circular path.

Centripetal Force In your text, the author derived an equation for centripetal acceleration starting with a particle moving with constant speed in a circle of radius r. 1. In the space provided below, show this derivation in detail. See Section 6.2 in your book. 2. In addition, apply Newton's 2nd law to this particle to show that the magnitude of the net force responsible for the motion is given by the following equation. Fc=mv^2/r This net force, which is the...

Are the following true or false? Please explain why. 1. an object undergoing projectile motion always has kinetic energy. 2. A static friction force always oppose the direction of motion of the body that it acts on. 3. When a body is moving in uniform circular motion, it has a constant kinetic energy. 4. Energy is neither created, nor destroyed, it is only transformed; unless a non-conservative force acts on the body. 5. A body with mass always experiences a...

1. Answer the following about gravity and acceleration. a) There are 2 aspects of acceleration. The first one is when an object is moving in a straight line and changing (starts with "s") and the second one is when an object is moving at a constant speed and changing (starts with "d"). What are the 2 aspects? b) Is it true that the net force on an object and its acceleration are proportional to each other? What about the vectors...

Question 1 The study of Uniform Circular Motion relates to objects traveling with constant speed around a circle with radius, R. Since the object has a constant speed along a circular path, we can also say that A) the object has zero velocity. B) the object has a constant acceleration magnitude. C) the object has zero acceleration. D) the object has a constant velocity. E) the object has an increasing acceleration. Question 2 Uniform Circular Motion (UCM) problems are just...

Speed means the absolute value of the velocity, hence it is always non-negative. While the sign of the velocity indicates the direction of the motion, the speed is insensitive to the direction. For example, speed is the value displayed by car’s speedometer; it does not indicate the direction of driving (e.g., northbound versus southbound). At time t = 0 seconds (s) an object has zero velocity and it starts a free fall from the altitude of 1200 metres (m) above...
