Why must there also be a horizontal force acting on the gyroscope due to the pivot?

Why must there also be a horizontal force acting on the gyroscope due to the pivot?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gravitational force acts at a center of mass and points downward. Pivot force acts between the end of the axle and the python. This force is also known as contact force.

It may seem that the contact force has only an upward component.. but there is necessary also a radially inward component to the contact force

As the lyroscope flywheel spins and its axis of rotation precesses, we can decompose the vector in newton second law, into vertical and radial direction.

Vertical direction

Inward direction

The centripetal force acting on an object undergoing uniform circular motion is the net force acting on the object. In this experiment, the centripetal force is due to tension in the string. In other scenarios, what forces can provide the centripetal force? Describe at least two scenarios of uniform circular motion and name the centripetal force in each. The best answers will be different from the ones given in the Introduction.

A solid metal rod 1.5m long is free to pivot without friction about a fixed horizontal axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through one of its ends. The rod is held in a horizontal position. Small coins, each of mass "m", are placed on the rod 25cm, 50cm, 75cm, 1m, 1.25m, and 1.5m from the pivot. If the free end is now released, calculate the initial force exerted on each coin by the rod. Assume that the masses of...
