Describe a couple of ways that a galaxy collision ending in a ‘major’ merger effects the structure of the galaxies involved.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

in galaxies collision, large galaxies absorb smaller galaxies, tearing them apart and incorporating their stars. But when interacting galaxies are smaller in size, their spiral structure is destroyed completely.

These interactions trigger a small amount of star formation. Galaxy collision causes galaxies to age prematurely since much of its gas is converted to stars.

The black holes of the individual galaxies will merge and create a supermassive black hole, which converges near the center of the newly formed galaxy

Gas taken by combined black hole creates an active nucleus to form at the center of the galaxy .
