Why will a roof often lift off when a hurricane force wind blows across the top of a house? Please explained with appropriate physics concepts. Thank you! (Hint: P smaller than Air P)

Answer #1

This is an example of Bernoulli's theorem, according to this when incompressible and non viscous fluid flows in streamlined motion from one to other place, at every point of its path the total energy per unit volume is constant.

ie

During a hurricane, when a high speed wind blows over a straw or tin roof, it creates a low pressure (P) in accordance with Bernoulli’s principle. However, the pressure below the roof is still atmospheric. So due to this difference of pressure the roof is lifted up and is then blown off by the wind.

Dynamic lift is also due to Bernoulli's theorem.
