Two faucets can be used to empty a tank of water. Suppose the tank is full. When both faucets are opened at the same time, the tank takes 2 hours to empty. However, if only one faucet is opened, then Faucet A can empty the tank twice as fast as Faucet B. If only Faucet B is opened, how long does it take to empty a full tank?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Volume of water in the tank = V

Volumetric flow of water through faucet A = Q1

Volumetric flow of water through faucet B = Q2

Time taken to empty the tank when only faucet A is open = T1

V = Q1T1

Time taken to empty the tank when only faucet B is open = T2

Faucet A empties the tank twice as fast as faucet B.

T2 = 2T1

V = Q2T2

V = Q2(2T1)

Time taken to empty the tank when both faucets are open = T = 2 hours

V = (Q1 + Q2)T

T1 = 1.5T

T1 = (1.5)(2)

T1 = 3 hours

T2 = 2T1

T2 = (2)(3)

T2 = 6 hours

Time taken to empty a full tank if only faucet B is opened = 6 hours

A large fish tank at an aquarium needs to be emptied so that it can be cleaned. When its large and small drains are opened together, the tank can be emptied in 2 hours. By itself, it takes the small drain 3 hours longer to empty the tank than it takes the large drain to empty the tank on its own. How much time would it take for each drain to empty the pool on its own?

A raised water tank has a leak at the bottom which causes the water surface to drop from elevation 4.88m to elevation 4.57 m in a period of 12 hours. (a) What will be the elevation of the water surface in the tank after 5 full days (starting from elevation 4.88m) if no water other than the leaking water is either added or drained from the tank? Problem 2 A 30,000 litre water tank has a 4.30 m internal diameter. It has two outlet pipes, one at the base of the tank and one higher up. The distance between the two outlets means that when the water level is at the height of the upper pipe there is still 8,000 litres of water remaining in the tank for fire-fighting if needed. The top portion of the tank is used for stock drinking water. a) If the tank...

Suppose water is leaking from a tank through a circular hole of area Ah at its bottom. When water leaks through a hole, friction and contraction of the stream near the hole reduce the volume of water leaving the tank per second to cAh 2gh , where c (0 < c < 1) is an empirical constant. A tank in the form of a right-circular cone standing on end, vertex down, is leaking water through a circular hole in its...
