How do you explain the phenomenon of wave interference?
The phenomenon were two waves superpose to form a resultant wave of higher, lower or same amplitude is called wave interference.
It happens when two waves travelling through the same medium meet.
This affects the medium to take the shape of the resultant wave of the two individual waves upon the particles of the medium.
Interference can be observed in light, acoustics, surface water waves, matter waves etc...
There are two types of interference. 1) Constructive interference : It occurs when the crest of the two waves add together to form a resulting wave having amplitude as the sum of the two individual waves.
2)Destructive interference: It occurs when crest of one wave meeta the trough of the other wave, resulting in the cancellation of the wave.
