Can you explain a minimum 5 properties of polarization?

Can you explain a minimum 5 properties of polarization?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Properties of Polarization:

1. Polarization is only applicable to transverse waves to study the geometrical orientation of oscillations.

2. Polarization leads to particle nature of light.

3. Polarized light have vibration confined to only one direction/plane.

4. The medium producing polarization must be homogeneous, isotropic and non-attenuating.

5. Polarization of e-m waves refers to the direction of the electric field. In linear polarization, the fields oscillate in a single direction. In circular or elliptical polarization, the field rotates at a constant rat in a plane.

With 5 mW of light of an unknown polarization incident on a linear polarizer, you measure no light after the polarizer. If you put another linear polarizer before the one used above with its pass axis oriented 60° with respect to the other, how much power should you measure? Would your answer be different if the second polarizer was placed after the first polarizer?
