What color would you see if you shined a white light through a cyan acetate on a yellow patch of paint? Draw a diagram of the light from the source to your eye and explain your answer in terms of the reflection and absorption of the primary color components of light.

Answer #1

As the white light passes through the cyan acetate filter, red light gets filtered and only green and blue i.e., cyan colour falls on the yellow patch of paint. The primary colours RGB as it filters through the cyan filter, the R gets absorbed and only GB gets reflected from the filter which then passes on to the yello patch. When the cyan light falls on the yellow patch, it will be visible as a green patch. The mixing of cyan and yellow(which are both secondary colours) will result in green colour, which is a primary colour.

You stand outside on a beautifully sunny day and see an ice cream truck with bright magenta writing on it. Draw what is happening, starting with sunlight and ending at your eye, for you to see this magenta writing. The side of the ice cream truck is painted bright cyan. You look at the truck through a yellow filter. What color does the truck appear to be? Draw what is happening, starting with sunlight and ending at your eye, for...

If you were underwater and looked upwards you would see a “circle of light” pouring down to your eyes from the water’s surface. The light inside this circle originated from above the water’s surface. Light outside of this circle originated from below the water’s surface (and is therefore darker.) This phenomenon is due to total internal reflection. Suppose you were to lay on the bottom of the shallow end of a pool (with a depth of 1 m) and looked...

Suppose you need an anti-reflection coating for glass, under yellow light (589.3nm). You can coat it with a thin layer of flourite (CaF_2) -- indices for this wavelength are: air flourite glass yellow: 1.000 1.434 1.500 a. Make a diagram showing the two brightest reflected rays from a single incident ray at normal incidence. b. By considering the phase changes, find the three minimum thickness of the coating that will suppress reflections. c. Would your conclusions change if you considered...

As you may already know, white light is composed of all the colors of the rainbow. Although we’ve talked about index of refraction of a material as being a single number, in reality, the index of refraction for each material varies slightly depending on the wavelength of light incident on the material. For example, the index of refraction of red light through glass is n = 1.509 while blue light through glass has n = 1.517. Use this information to...
