Calculate the dipole moment of a water molecule. Assume the angle between the two OH bonds is 104o and that the OH distance is 1.0 x 10-8 cm. Take the OH bonds to be purely ionic in character by assuming that all ten electrons orbit the oxygen atom. Give your answer for the dipole moment in Debye units (D) where 1 D = 3.34 x 10-30 C-m. Debye units are convenient because dipole moments of many molecules are in the range of 1 to 10 D. Compare you answer with the accepted dipole moment of the water molecule in it vapor state – you will need to look up this number. If your result is different from the accepted value can you give a possible explanation as to why?
