A concrete block hangs on a spring scale. The scale records the weight to be 98 N(10kg). The block is them immersed in glycerine of density 1.26x10^3 kg/m^3. What is the new weight of the block recorded by the scale? ( Density of concrete= 2x10^3 kg/m^3, g=9.8m/s^2)
A. 19.45N
B. 36.26N
C. 17.00N
D. 20.03N
E. 13.48N

Answer #1

When a body is immersed in a liquid, in addition to gravitational force, buoyant force due to the liquid also acts on the body in the upward direction. As a result, the resultant weight of the liquid reduces and is given the difference of actual weight and buoyant force.

Volume of concrete = Mass/density

Buoyant force on the block, where is density of liquid, V is volume of solid, g is acceleration due to gravity.

New weight, W = Actual weight - buoyant force

Option B is correct.
