List the essential components of an electric generator and explain the role of each component in generating an alternating emf.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) magnets: the magnets used in the generator are generally permanent magnets or electromagnets to produce magnetic field passing through the coil.

2) Armature: it consists of coils of current carrying wires in which emf is produced.

3) Rotor (prime mover): A mechanism to rotate the coil in the magnetic field to change the magnetic flux. It may be a turbine run by the windmill, thermal energy etc.

4) slip rings: These provide electrical connection for transfer of current to and fro from the generator . Brushes ride on the slip rings when the rotor rotates in a magnetic field.

5) Commutator: In DC generator a commutator is used to provide a current which is always in the same direction.

An electric generator contains a coil of 125 turns of wire, each forming a rectangular loop 45.0 cm by 20.0 cm. The coil is placed entirely in a uniform magnetic field with magnitude B = 3.50 T and with B-> initially perpendicular to the coil's plane. What is the maximum value of the emf produced when the coil is spun at 1250 rev/min about an axis perpendicular to B->?

An electric generator is designed to produce a maximum emf of 220 V while rotating with an angular speed of 3600 rpm. Each coil of the generator has an area of 0.027 m2. a.) If the magnetic field used in the generator has a magnitude of 0.050 T, how many turns of wire are needed? b.) During the rotation of the coils, the magnetic flux through the coils will alternately be increasing and decreasing. (Why?) While the flux is increasing,...
