Now consider a beam of white light that enters a prism. Which one of the following statements is correct concerning the light exiting the prism (the outgoing light)?

The outgoing light is separated into the colours of the rainbow, with the red light bent the most.

The outgoing light is a beam of white light.

The outgoing light is separated into the colours of the rainbow, with the violet light bent the most.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

when a white light enters the prism

we will observe the out going light is separated into the colours of the rainbow so that

the deviation of the red light is less than the deviation of the voilet colour or

the violet colour bent is more than the red colour , the mean deviation wiil be for yellow colout

that means the angle of deviation for voilet colour is more than red colour

so the answer is The outgoing light is separated into the colours of the rainbow, with the violet light bent the most.

As shown in the figure, white light enters a 45-90-45 crown glass prism at the vertical face. Part of this light refracts at the slanted face into the surrounding material and the rest experiences total internal reflection and exits the prism at the horizontal base. The colors of light that emerge from the slanted face may be chosen by varying the index of refraction of the material surrounding the prism. Determine the required index of refraction of the surrounding material...

A narrow beam of white light enters the narrow edge of a rectangular pane of glass at an angle of 60° from the direction perpendicular to the edge. The pane is 0.50 m in width. Estimate how far apart the red and blue parts of the visible spectrum will be when the light leaves the glass, first if the pane is made from crown glass and then if it is made from dense flint glass. If I shine white light onto a diffraction grating at a distance of 1m, which wavelengths bend more, blues/violets or reds? (Remember, all five of these cases involve DIFfraction) Is this the same or opposite color bending order when compared to rainbow refraction? Where does the first band of red light hit the screen? (Draw a picture with all information you have so far) Where does the first band of violet light hit the screen?

Which of the following statements is true about the speeds of the various colors of light in glass? Violet has the highest speed, red the lowest. Red has the highest speed, violet the lowest. Green has the highest speed, red and violet the lowest. Red and violet have the highest speed, green the lowest. All colors of light have the same speed in glass.

Which of the following is a correct statement? (1 point) Dispersion of light occures because different colors of light have different refractive indexes. All colors of light have the same refractive index in a given medium. Dispersion is selective transmission of light. The seven different colors of light listed in decreasing order of wavelength are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. As wavelength of light increases, refractive index increases.

Which of the following statements about how light can interact with atoms is correct? (Check all that are correct) The photons most likely to ionize atoms have the longest wavelengths An atom can most easily absorb a photon with an energy that is equal to the difference in energy of two electron states. The frequencies of the spectral lines produced by an excited atom give the energies of individual electron states. The frequencies of bright lines produced by excited atoms...
