A long rope of total mass m is hanging down from the rafters in the gym

a) Does the speed of a wave pulse increase, decrease, or remain the same as it ascends the rope. Explain your answer.

b) Now that we know what to expect calculate the time a pulse needs to travel up that rope as a function of the mass, and the length of the rope and any other parameters that might be necessary.

Answer #1

a)

As the rope ascends , the tension force in the rope decreases . we know that

speed = sqrt(tension/mass density)

so as the tension force decreases , the speed also decrease

b)

L = length of rope

= mass per unit length

T = tension force = mg

speed is given as

v = sqrt(T/)

time taken is given as

t = L/v = L/sqrt(T/) = L sqrt()/sqrt(T)

1. For a stationary ball of mass m = 0.200 kg hanging from a massless string, draw arrows (click on the “Shapes” tab) showing the forces acting on the ball (lengths can be arbitrary, but get the relative lengths of each force roughly correct). For this case of zero acceleration, use Newton’s 2nd law to find the magnitude of the tension force in the string, in units of Newtons. Since we will be considering motion in the horizontal xy plane,...

A large tractor-trailer of total mass M = 10 metric tons (10,000 kg) is traveling down I-70 in Colorado, coming down from the Rocky Mountains into Denver. A segment of this road that is 25 kilometers long descends a total of 1000 meters. Suppose that the truck driver wants to drive at a constant speed of v = 50 km/hr. Finding the Spring Constant We can describe an oscillating mass in terms of its position, velocity, and acceleration as a function of time. We can also describe the system from an energy perspective. In this experiment, you will measure the position and velocity as a function of time for an oscillating mass and spring system, and from those data, plot the kinetic and potential energies of the system. Energy is present in three forms for the mass and spring system....

Elon Musk wasn’t smiling, when he said, “Welcome to Model 3 handover.” Through a single silver door, a few moments before, he had entered the room, flanked by nearly two dozen employees including an engineer and designer who joined him on stage. Black floor, rich red curtains, and slate grey backdrop and a white Tesla logo. There were no introductions necessary. At first, Musk’s voice had a breathy quality. He seemed nervous. Nerves were understandable on the precipice of what...
