1.Considering the three mechanisms of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), discuss how the calorimeter could be improved.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Before going to the calorimeter, let's take a brief look at what these three mechanisms are :

Conduction - Heat transfer through molecular motion

Convection - Transfer of heat through mass movement of substance

Radiation - Transfer of heat via electromagnetic waves. radiation from sun, heat from a bonfire.

The biggest source of error or inaccuracy in calorimeter is the unwanted heat loss to surroundings. When the liquid or any substance inside the calorimeter is heated, convection takes place inside the beaker as the warm air rises up. Also due to conduction and movement of molecules and interaction between them, the walls get hot and heat is rejected to the surroundings via radiation.

We can prevent this heat loss by incorporating proper insulation. The most preferred insulation material is styrofoam.

a) State with an example how conduction is different from convection and radiation? b) A hot steam engine as shown bee, consumes 800 KW of fuel while burning at a temperature of 700 K it produces 200 KW of power and rejects 600KW of heat at 400K. By applying the laws of thermodynamics, calculate and investigate if this operation is even possible. Please answer both the parts. Thank you!

Consider a surface of area 26 m2 at which the convection and radiation heat transfer coefficients are 13.05 W/m2·K and 20.39 W/m2·K, respectively. Assume the medium and the surrounding surfaces are at the same temperature. Determine the single equivalent heat transfer coefficient (in W/m2·K). (Round the final answer to two decimal places.)

We have been learning Heat Transfer for the whole semester and now are close to the end.  A good way to help you review all the topics and contents we've learned is to describe in your words how do you analyze or solve a general heat transfer problem. You may use a flow chart or write down a paragraph to describe the general methodology to solve heat transfer problems. For example, given a problem, the first thing is to determine whether...
