Compare polymer phase diagrams to a metal phase diagram, how do they compare/differ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

polymer phase diagrams and metal phase diagrams are different in the following main points:

a. polymers start metlting at temperature T1 and undergo complete melting at temperature T2 > T1

in the temperature range T1 < T < T2, the polymer exists in two state situation where it is in liquid as well as solid phase

for metals, the melting point is strictly defined and at this temperatures the metals melt into liquid form, so there is no region of temperature range for coexistence of liquid and solid form

Which of the following is false regarding phase diagrams ? the critical point is the point above which liquids and gases lose their phase distinction a phase diagram is a plot of temperature vs density the triple point represents the conditions where solid/liquid/gas phases exist in equilibrium solids exist at relatively high pressures and/or low temperatures for most substances, the solid-liquid phase transition line has a positive slope
