Two resistors, with resistance R1= 5 ohms and R2=25 ohms are connected in series in a circuit. The current flow generates heat at a rate of 1280 J/s in R1. What is the voltage drop across R2?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Resistance of the first resistor = R1 = 5

Resistance of the second resistor = R2 = 25

Current in the first resistor = I1

Current in the second resistor = I2

Rate at which heat generated by the first resistor = P1 = 1280 J/s

I1 = 16 A

The resistors are connected in series therefore the current through the resistors is the same.

I2 = I1

I2 = 16 A

Voltage drop across the second resistor = V2

V2 = I2R2

V2 = (16)(25)

V2 = 400 V

Voltage drop across R2 = 400 V
