What is the minimum horizontal force that will cause a 5.00-kg box to begin to slide on a horizontal surface when the coefficient of static friction is 0.710? (Express your answer to three significant figures.)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gravitational acceleration = g = 9.81 m/s2

Mass of the box = m = 5 kg

Coefficient of static friction = = 0.71

Normal force on the box from the horizontal surface = N

N = mg

Maximum friction force on the box = f

f = N

f = mg

Minimum horizontal force so that the box begins to slide = F

For the box to start sliding the minimum force must overcome the maximum friction force.

F = f

F = mg

F = (0.71)(5)(9.81)

F = 34.8 N

Minimum force that will cause the box to slide = 34.8 N
