A point charge of +2.00 μC is dropped from rest. After falling for 1.00 s, a uniform magnetic field of 0.250T directed northward is applied. What is the direction of the magnetic force on the point charge?

Choices:
Westward
Eastward
Upward
Downward

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mangnetic force on a moving charged particle is given by:

F = q*VxB

Now direction of magnetic force is given by right hand rule, according to this rule:

If we point our thumb towards the motion of charge and point fingers toward the direction of magnetic field, then direction of palm will show the direction of magnetic force on positively charged particle.

Now in given scenario, Point your thumb into the page (since dropped from rest) and point your fingers in north direction, then your palm will be in east direction.

So Direction of force = Eastward

Correct option is B.
