In a variable air-filled capacitor, N plates of area A are connected together so as to carry alternating charges, and each plate is separated by d. One group of plates is fixed whilst the other group is free to rotate. i) Comment in relation to this device, on how an effective capacitance is calculated for a combination of capacitors in a circuit. ii) Starting from Gauss’s Law, determine an expression for the capacitance of the device. iii) Determine the maximum capacitance of the device where N = 10, each plate having area, A = 2.2 cm2 and a separation from its adjacent plate by d = 2.2 mm.
